Korea โ€” Distances & Travel Times โ€‹

Reference for the Apr 15โ€“29, 2026 trip. Two sections:

  1. In-Seoul distances from your Myeongdong hostel (ยง1)
  2. Inter-city and day-trip distances from Seoul Station (ยง3 onwards)

Fares are rates as of 2025 (live search unavailable in this session โ€” verify at the sources listed at the end before booking). USD conversions at โ‚ฉ1,350 = $1.

1. In-Seoul distances โ€” from Hithere City Myeongdong โ€‹

Your base: Hithere City Myeongdong, 5th Floor, 31 Myeongdong 4-gil, Jung-gu. Closest subway: Myeongdong Station (Line 4) โ€” ~2โ€“3 min walk, exits 5/6/8. Also in walking range: Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2, ~6 min), Euljiro 3-ga (Lines 2 & 3, ~10 min), Chungmuro (Lines 3 & 4, ~8 min), Seoul Station (Line 1/4 + AREX, ~15 min walk or 1 subway stop).

This hostel position is excellent โ€” you're inside the subway diamond formed by Lines 1/2/3/4, which means almost everywhere in Seoul is 1 transfer or less.

How to travel around โ€‹

  • T-money card โ€” buy at any convenience store (~โ‚ฉ3,000 empty + load). Tap in/out, โ‚ฉ1,400 base fare per ride + ~โ‚ฉ100/5km extra. Transfers free within 30 min.
  • Climate Card (๊ธฐํ›„๋™ํ–‰์นด๋“œ) โ€” โ‚ฉ65,000/30-day or shorter passes for unlimited Seoul metro + bus. Worth it if you're riding 4+ times per day for a full week. Does not cover AREX to/from ICN.
  • Kakao T โ€” default taxi app. Accepts foreign cards. From Myeongdong to Gangnam ~โ‚ฉ15,000 (20 min no traffic); to Hongdae ~โ‚ฉ12,000 (15 min); to ICN ~โ‚ฉ70,000 (55 min + toll).
  • Walking โ€” most of central Seoul (palaces, DDP, Cheonggyecheon) is within 30 min walk of your base. Korean sidewalks are good.

2. How Korea is shaped spatially โ€‹

South Korea is small and linear. The country runs roughly 400 km northโ€“south and 300 km eastโ€“west โ€” about the footprint of Portugal, or Indiana. Seoul sits in the far northwest, 40 km from the DMZ and 30 km from the Yellow Sea coast, with half the national population packed into the metro area. Nearly every destination tourists care about is either (a) south of Seoul down the Gyeongbu corridor (Daejeon โ†’ Daegu โ†’ Gyeongju โ†’ Busan), (b) east into the mountains and coast (Gapyeong โ†’ Chuncheon โ†’ Pyeongchang โ†’ Gangneung โ†’ Sokcho), or (c) a short hop northwest (Paju, DMZ, Incheon).

The Seoulโ€“Busan axis is the spine: 325 km end-to-end, 2h30โ€“2h50 by KTX/SRT. Gyeongju and Daegu sit roughly two-thirds of the way down that line. Jeonju branches off southwest; Gangneung and Sokcho branch east. Jeju is a separate island 450 km south โ€” domestic flight only, 60โ€“70 min from Gimpo (GMP). The useful mental model: nothing on the mainland is more than ~3 hours from Seoul by fast train, so multi-night side trips are a choice, not a necessity.

Assumptions: adult one-way economy/standard fare, weekday, non-peak. Bus and subway fares largely fixed through 2026; KTX/SRT fares historically adjust ~2โ€“5% yearly, so budget a small buffer.

4. Seoul โ†’ Busan (Apr 21 departure, Apr 24 or 25 return) โ€‹

KTX (Gyeongbu line) โ€” from Seoul Station โ€‹

  • Route: Seoul โ†’ Gwangmyeong โ†’ Cheonan-Asan โ†’ Daejeon โ†’ Dongdaegu โ†’ Ulsan โ†’ Busan.
  • Duration: 2h40 nonstop, 2h50โ€“3h00 with more stops.
  • Fare: ~โ‚ฉ59,800 economy, โ‚ฉ83,700 first class (2025 rate โ€” verify at letskorail.com).
  • Frequency: every 15โ€“30 min at peak, ~60+ departures a day.
  • First train: ~05:15 Seoul โ†’ Busan. Last train: ~22:50.

SRT alternative โ€” from Suseo Station (Gangnam-adjacent, Line 3 / Suinbundang) โ€‹

  • Duration: 2h30 (slightly faster โ€” newer line via Suseo high-speed tunnel).
  • Fare: ~โ‚ฉ52,800 economy (~10% cheaper than KTX).
  • Catch: Suseo is 45 min from Hongdae/Jongno by subway. If you're staying central-north, the time saved on the train is eaten by the trip to Suseo. SRT wins if you're staying in Gangnam/Songpa; otherwise KTX from Seoul Station is easier.
  • First train: ~05:05. Last train: ~23:00.

Booking: book ahead or walk up? โ€‹

  • Apr 21 (Tuesday) morning departure: Tuesday is the lightest travel day of the week. Morning KTX between 08:00โ€“10:00 is popular with business travelers but almost never sells out the night before. Booking 2โ€“3 days ahead is fine. Walk-up works if you flex ยฑ1 train.
  • Apr 24 (Friday) or Apr 25 (Saturday) return to Seoul: Friday evening and Sunday night are the genuinely busy slots going into Seoul โ€” less so the reverse. Saturday midday back to Seoul from Busan will have wide availability. Book at least 2 days ahead to lock a window seat, but same-day economy is very likely available.
  • Note: April is shoulder season in Korea โ€” no major domestic holiday blocks Apr 21โ€“25 (Children's Day is May 5). Cherry-blossom rush has mostly ended by mid-April.

Booking platforms โ€‹

  • letskorail.com โ€” official KORAIL, English, no fee. Needs a card that works with Korean payment gateways; some foreign cards fail.
  • etk.srail.kr โ€” official SRT, English version exists but clunky. Same payment caveat.
  • Klook / Trip.com โ€” foreign-friendly, accept any Visa/MC, charge a ~5โ€“10% markup. Worth it if KORAIL rejects your card.
  • At the station: unmanned kiosks accept foreign cards inconsistently; the staffed window always works. Allow 15 min before departure.

KORAIL PASS โ€” worth it for one round-trip? โ€‹

Short answer: no.

  • 2-day Flexi PASS (adult): ~โ‚ฉ131,000. 3-day consecutive: ~โ‚ฉ165,000. 2025 rates.
  • Seoulโ€“Busan round-trip on KTX = 2 ร— โ‚ฉ59,800 = โ‚ฉ119,600.
  • The pass is cheaper only if you add a third KTX leg (e.g., Busan โ†’ Gyeongju โ†’ Seoul). If you do Busan + Gyeongju + one other KTX leg like Gangneung or Jeonju in the same pass window, it tips in favor.
  • For your itinerary: if you're doing Seoul โ†’ Busan, then Busan โ†’ Gyeongju, then Gyeongju โ†’ Seoul all within a 2-day KORAIL PASS window, you net about โ‚ฉ10โ€“15k savings. Otherwise skip it.
  • The pass does not cover SRT โ€” KORAIL-only.

Mujeongseok (์ž…์„ โ€” standing room) โ€‹

If a train is sold out, you can buy mujeongseok (standing ticket) for ~15% off the seated fare. You ride in the vestibule or any empty seat until its holder boards. On Seoulโ€“Busan this means ~2.5 hours of on-and-off standing. Fine for desperate cases, unpleasant with luggage. Available for KTX and SRT both.

5. Busan โ†’ Gyeongju โ€‹

  • KTX (Busan โ†’ Singyeongju): 30โ€“35 min, ~โ‚ฉ11,000. Singyeongju station is 15 km west of the historic center; requires bus 700 or taxi (~โ‚ฉ18,000) into town. ~20 departures/day.
  • ITX-Saemaul / Mugunghwa (Bujeon Stn, Busan โ†’ Gyeongju Stn): 1h20โ€“1h40, ~โ‚ฉ7,500โ€“11,000. Old Gyeongju station is closer to the tomb park but service is reduced since KTX opened.
  • Express bus (Busan Nopo Terminal โ†’ Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal): 1h00, ~โ‚ฉ5,500. Drops you closest to Bomun Lake area. Frequent, no booking needed.

Verdict: KTX for speed, bus for convenience to the sights. Many travelers do KTX out, bus back.

Overnight in Gyeongju: yes. Gyeongju is small enough that you can see the highlights (Daereungwon tombs, Cheomseongdae, Donggung palace/Wolji pond lit at night, Bulguksa + Seokguram) in a day โ€” but Wolji pond at night is the single best thing in the city, and the last KTX back to Busan is around 22:00. Staying one night means you get the evening illumination, dinner in the old town, and morning Bulguksa before buses arrive. Book a hanok guesthouse in the Hwangnidan-gil area.

6. Day-trip cluster groupings โ€‹

Group destinations that share a direction so you're not zig-zagging:

NW cluster โ€” Paju + DMZ โ€‹

Both sit northwest of Seoul toward the North Korean border. Several tour operators (Koridoor, VIP Tours, Klook-listed) combine DMZ half-day + Paju Book City / Heyri Art Village in a single 10-hour trip. The DMZ portion must be booked โ‰ฅ3 days ahead with passport number.

Gapyeong cluster โ€” Nami + Garden of Morning Calm + Petite France โ€‹

The classic K-drama loop. Gapyeong shuttle bus (โ‚ฉ6,000 day pass) connects all three from Gapyeong Station. Take ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan (~75 min), hit Nami Island (2โ€“3 hr), then Garden of Morning Calm or Petite France (2 hr), return by ~19:00. Avoid Saturdays โ€” heaving.

South cluster โ€” Suwon + Everland โ€‹

Hwaseong Fortress in the morning (2โ€“3 hr walk of the walls), then shuttle or taxi to Everland (15 km east) for afternoon/evening. Both are Gyeonggi-do; total day is doable but intense. Skip Everland if you have one day only โ€” Hwaseong deserves an unhurried visit.

East cluster โ€” Chuncheon + Nami โ€‹

Chuncheon = dakgalbi lunch + Soyang Lake; Nami = afternoon. Both on the ITX-Cheongchun line. Chuncheon is the end of the line, Gapyeong (Nami) is 20 min before it. Do Chuncheon first (further out), Nami on the way back.

Line 3 NW cluster โ€” Goyang โ€‹

Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang (Wonheung stn) + Starfield Goyang + KINTEX are all within 3 km and all on or near Subway Line 3. Half-day trip. Pair with Paju if you're renting a car; otherwise separate days.

7. Airport transfers โ€‹

ICN โ†’ central Seoul โ€‹

KAL Limousine Bus60โ€“80 minโ‚ฉ18,000Multiple city routes, drops at major hotels. Good if you have heavy bags and no subway patience.
Taxi / Kakao T55โ€“75 minโ‚ฉ60,000โ€“90,000+20% late-night surcharge 00:00โ€“04:00. Toll ~โ‚ฉ8,000 extra.

GMP (Gimpo) โ€‹

Domestic + short-haul regional (Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei).

  • Subway Line 5 or 9 to central Seoul: 30โ€“40 min, โ‚ฉ1,700.
  • AREX also stops at GMP (it's on the line between ICN and Seoul Stn).
  • Taxi: ~30 min, โ‚ฉ25โ€“35k to Hongdae/Jongno.
  • Jeju flights depart from GMP โ€” much closer than ICN for domestic hops.

Return routing โ€” Apr 29 LH713, ICN 12:20 departure โ€‹

Working backward:

  • Gate close: ~11:50 โ†’ at gate by 11:40.
  • Security + immigration: allow 45โ€“60 min on a Wednesday morning โ€” budget to clear by 11:00.
  • Terminal: LH713 โ†’ ICN Terminal 1. Confirm on boarding pass; AREX serves both T1 and T2 but they're a 10-min shuttle apart.
  • Check bags: online check-in opens 23 hr prior; bag drop closes 60 min before departure. At bag drop by 10:30.
  • AREX Express from Seoul Station 43 min โ†’ arrive ICN 09:55 โ†’ board Seoul Stn AREX 08:50 or 09:00 (runs every 25 min: โ€ฆ08:30, 08:55, 09:20โ€ฆ).
  • Leave your accommodation: 08:15โ€“08:25 depending on distance to Seoul Station. From Hongdae, subway Line 2 to Hongik Univ โ†’ Gyeonguiโ€“Jungang line or transfer at City Hall, ~20 min. From Ikseon-dong / Jongno 3-ga, Line 1 to Seoul Stn, ~10 min. From Gangnam, Line 4 to Seoul Stn, ~25 min.
  • Buffer: if anyone in the group is historically slow at mornings, push everything 30 min earlier. Wednesday 10:00 at ICN is moderately busy but not extreme.

One alternative worth considering: if you're staying in Hongdae or Gangnam on the last night, skip Seoul Station entirely and take the 6001 / 6015 KAL bus directly from a nearby hotel stop. 70 min but door-to-terminal โ€” worth it with 3 people and bags.

Sources to verify before booking โ€‹

  • Korea Tourism Organization: english.visitkorea.or.kr.
  • Gapyeong tourism: gp.go.kr.
  • DMZ tours: Koridoor (koridoor.co.kr), VIP Travel, or via Klook/Viator โ€” confirm passport requirements 3+ days ahead.
